Dear Falmouth Soccer Families,
I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to another soccer season. As an FYSA parent and coach, I truly hope that your child enjoys the season and continues to develop a passion for the game of soccer. Together with many other folks from the community, I will be overseeing the 19th Falmouth Fall Classic. The FFC is an annual community event that brings teams together from all over the state of Maine and some neighboring states. This year’s Falmouth Fall Classic is scheduled for Oct 12-14th. The younger age groups (U9-U11) ONLY play on Oct. 12 and 13th, whereas the older competitive age groups (U12-U14) may also play one game on Monday morning, Oct. 14th, if they advance to the playoffs.
For those of you that have participated in the FFC in past years, thanks very much for your continued support. All of the money raised during the FFC goes directly into an account that is used to fund field improvement projects and player scholarships for those that are unable to cover the registration fee. Last year’s tournament raised over $30,000 and this money was part of a recent gift that FYSA gave to the Town of Falmouth for a project at Falmouth Community Park to help with drainage and a new playground. This benefits everyone in our community and could not be done without your help and support!
Many people have been working hard over the past several months to prepare for the tournament, which is only a short time away. As you can imagine there is a lot of work that goes into this and thankfully we have some great people that are leading different teams. We are however still looking for an assistant director to help me as the director of the FFC! The assistant director will train under me this fall and then continue to be the director of the FFC next year. If you are interested in becoming part of the core unit of amazing people who each year give many hours of volunteering for this fund raising event for FYSA, please contact me directly at the email listed below.
We currently have 155 teams (including one team from Canada) registered to participate in the tournament this year! The success of the tournament depends greatly on you. This year we would like to have families to commit to 3 hours of volunteer time per child with a maximum of 6 volunteer hours per family. This will help the tournament not only run smoothly, but will also avoid having a smaller handful of people volunteering much more than 6 hours over the course of the weekend. Thanks for your assistance with this.
As the tournament gets closer you will be receiving communication from your coach and/or team administrator about different jobs that we will need help with. Those jobs will range from field marshal to concessions and from parking to field maintenance. Our volunteer coordinator will be working hard to help ensure that your job assignment will not conflict with a game that your child will be playing in. This would also be a terrific opportunity for your high school student to obtain some required community service hours.
You should also be receiving information from your coach or team administrator about the Fall Classic tournament T-shirts. This year, we will have two pre-tournament T-shirts to choose from; one is our traditional white long sleeved t-shirt with this year’s logo, ELEVATE YOUR GAME on the back. Pre-tournament price is $12 and you will need to order it via your coach or Team Administrator BEFORE Sept. 14th. You can also buy it during the tournament for $15. The second T-shirt option is a NIKE Legend short sleeved t-shirt (in Dri Max material) that will ONLY be available for purchase ONLINE and only PRE-TOURNAMENT for $25!! Because of the expensive material, we are only offering it as an online pre-tournament sale and not offering it during the actual tournament. The Nike t-shirt looks like a more traditional “soccer jersey” and we hope that all of you who have been asking for a short sleeved FFC t-shirt will be happy with this new option. Louise Hester, our registrar will
send a blast email to all FYSA families shortly with the link to buy the NIKE t-shirt.
Finally, we also need to ask you to leave your favorite family pet at home for the weekend. Since this is such a large event, special permits are required and those permits do not allow dogs anywhere on Falmouth Community Park or Falmouth High School during that weekend. Please pass along to all family and friends that may attend to leave the dog at home.
The Falmouth Fall Classic is a terrific community event and we look forward to working with you in order to make this another successful year.
Sean Mahoney, FFC Director
